MBA – Masters of Business Administration

Describe your experience of studying at Ulster in 3 words

Engaging, Informative, Interesting

Why did you choose your postgraduate course?

I have been playing the sport of ice hockey professionally for four seasons, prior to that I studied in America for eight years. Attending Northwood Prep in Lake placid NY and then New England College in Henniker NH from which I gain a Bachelor of Science & Bachelor of Arts in both Business Administration & Accounting. When I made the choice to come back to Europe to play professionally, I set myself the goal of getting my MBA while still playing and before the age of thirty.

When I had the opportunity to attend Ulster University I jumped at the chance, as I knew the success that previous Belfast Giants players had achieved through utilising their qualifications after playing.

Why did you choose Ulster University to do your MBA?

A big selling point was the success stories I had heard regarding previous Giants players who had previously done the MBA. Not only whilst studying but also positions they are now in and how they are utilizing the Masters all over world.

What advice would you give someone considering postgraduate study?

Most importantly go into every course with an open mind, each person is different and will be more inclined to be more excited about certain classes and material than others. Every class and professor has something to offer you and make the most of that, because when you leave you will have a significantly broader horizon regarding many subjects.

Also make the most of your resources and others in the class, we all come from different walks of life and have different life experiences that can help you.

We all have busy lives, whether it’s an athlete, parent or those working a tradition nine to five. In order to be successful with the MBA or any form of education, you must prioritise your time. The material provided from the professors at Ulster University allows you to work around busy schedules and learn what is required to succeed in a productive manor.

How do you envisage your MBA will help you in your future?

Next year I will be playing for a team close to London, I will be doing some part time work in the city to ensure that once I finish playing I can go into the world of business in a seamless manor. The MBA will assist in this in a very large way.

What did you enjoy most about the course? Is there one thing in particular that stands out?

I enjoyed the variety of material, I have such a broader understanding of Business after the past two years at Ulster University. I also really enjoyed the different experiences of all those in the classes, people from all over the world give you the ability to discuss and learn about different cultures of business. In the ever expanding globalization this information is crucial, and I believe really assisted in all those in the class leaving more rounded, with a clear better understanding of business.
